Anya Hindmarch is own of the most iconic British designers of our day.
Her love of handbags started at the early age of 16 after she was given a vintage Gucci from her mother but it was while studying in Italy in 1986 when she noticed a drawstring leather duffel bag on the arms of fashionistas when her entrepreneurial spirit kicked in. She borrowed money to import bags to England and after sending a bag to Harpers and Queen, she managed to sell 500 bags and founded her own business in 1987.
By 1992, her designs were being sold at luxury stores in London, New York, Japan, France and Italy and 1993, she opened her first retail shop in London’s Walton Street.
Along with her ‘Be a Bag’, Hindmarch’s most infamous creation is her limited edition ‘I’m NOT a Plastic Bag’. This canvas totes helped start the movement to make it fashionable to not use plastic. And in 2020, she launched her ‘I AM A Plastic Bag’ to tackle post-consumer waste with each bag crafted from 32 half-litre recycled plastic bottles before going further with ‘The Universal Bag’ which is a unique collaboration with supermarkets.

Anya Hindmarch was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2009 for services to the British fashion industry and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2017.
