Meet The Technician: Stephen Robson

Name: Stephen Robson

Title: Senior Workshop Technician

Stephen is Handbag Clinic’s senior technician. After years of in depth and specialised training he now supervises all of the repair technicians as well as repairing handbags himself.

1) How long have you worked for Handbag Clinic?

‘’I have worked for Handbag Clinic since October 2009, when it was part of our now parent company Furniture Clinic. Handbag Clinic then branched off and became its own individual brand in 2013.’’

2) What made you want to become a leather repair technician?

‘’I started on the Upholstery Apprenticeship, which was a fantastic opportunity. From there I really developed my skills and it became clear that this was a career I would really enjoy. The progression to Handbag Clinic meant I could use my expertise on high-end brands and focus my repair skills on high value items which I find both exciting and rewarding on a personal level.’’

3) What is the most famous brand of handbag you have worked on?

‘’Hermes’’

4) What is the highest value of bag you have worked on?

‘’A Hermes bag worth £125,000’’

5) What is your favourite part of the job?

‘’The most interesting part is analysing the materials, the bags and what other items are made from. It is important to understand what type of leather has been used on a bag because this will determine how to repair it.

All bags that come into the workshop are inspected under a magnifying glass, so we can see if it is an untreated leather or whether it has been pigmented etc. This will allow us to restore the leather the best way possible and to keep the look original, but I find this the most exciting part as you get to identify the bag properly.’’

6)      What is the most important part of your role?

‘’Pleasing the customer always remains top priority. It is essential to understand exactly what the customer wants and the best way to meet those expectations. Each bag comes to us with a detailed treatment instruction and the technicians and I always analyse this closely before starting any work. This way we know exactly what problems the bag has and exactly what work is to be carried out.

These bags are very precious to our customers, therefore getting this part of my role right has to be the most important. Once we know exactly what the customer would like we then pair this with our professional expertise and deliver an outstanding result.’’

7)      How do you apply colour to a bag?

‘’This is a difficult question because the brand or rather style of bag determine how the bag is coloured. It is the technicians job to assess the bag and approach the colouring stage using the most efficient method from experience.

We use differing colouring methods including balming, re-spraying and even hand painting for those intricate areas. It just depends on the style- sometimes all methods can be used on one bag. However, all items are re-coloured by hand as this is the best way to ensure accurate re-colouring and the necessary attention to detail.’’

8)      What is the quirkiest item you have worked on?

‘’We will work on any item that we can logically repair, so I have seen some very fascinating items. I think one of the most striking was the Shotgun case that was submitted for scuff repairs. The case was made of leather and needed to have colour touch ups due to wear and tear. Another piece that stood out was the Louis Vuitton whiskey case that again needed colour work. This item was so original and like nothing that I had ever seen before!’’

9)      What is your top-tip for maintaining a bag?

‘’Definitely correctly storing the bag. It is very important to keep a handbag in its dust-bag and stuffed when it is stored away to ensure the shape is maintained. Leather is a natural product therefore if it creases or loses its shape it is not an easy task to reverse these effects! Therefore, preventing this is essential.’’
