Could Hermès be the most luxurious handbag brand to have ever graced the planet? Established in 1837 by Thierry Hermès, Hermès have a long and eclectic 179 year history delivering fine high-end Parisian fashion goods. Specialising in perfumes, ready-to-wear clothing and leather accessories, in which handbags feature prominently, Hermès have had a huge impact on the modern fashion landscape we encapsulate ourselves within today.
However, their prominence was not always so evident; at the very beginning of the brands inception Thierry’s Parisian workshop focussed on making fine horse saddles and equestrian accessories. It was in 1922 the brand introduced their first ever leather handbag, the ‘Haut a Courroies’, which resembles the bags that are available today- an initial blueprint for some of the most successful fashion designs ever.
It was later in the 1950’s, when Hermès adopted their iconic all-orange branding which is now a widely recognised symbol of quality and authenticity. Shortly after this, in 1956, the ‘Kelly’ bag made its debut, and then in 1978 the much-revered ‘Birkin’ was added into the equation. The 'Birkin' remains the pinnacle of handbag luxury with high-profile fans including The Kardashians, Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Rita Ora, Heidi Klum, Eva Longoria and The Olsen twins amongst many others.
Over the years not only have Hermès handbags been revered for their subtle, sophisticated design, build quality and materials but also their place as a status symbol within society- a handbag for the fashion conscious uber-rich elite. The retail price of an average Birkin begins at around £5000 in most basic form and rises considerably depending on colour, type of leather and the precious metals and stones that are incorporated into the refined aesthetic.
Coming in a plethora of colours and exotic leathers, as well as being available with diamond embellishments in rare metals, some combinations are worth excessive amounts due to their rarity and desirability. The after-market is where prices start to become speculative, with some one-off or extremely limited models being fought over at auctions all over the world.
In 2016 Hermès 'Birkin’s' remain on this meteoric rise, emphasised by the fact that a Hermès sold for over $300k at Christies Hong Kong 30th anniversary sale. Made from white matte Himalayan Crocodile leather with diamond encrusted white gold hardware this is the highest Hermès to have ever sold, but surprisingly not by much! Last year the record was set at $222,000: a fuchsia diamond encrusted 'Birkin', and these bags are only increasing in value. There is arguably no better designer investment than a 'Birkin' in the current fashion market, to the extent that it has been argued they hold and increase in value at a greater speed than gold. They are literally worth their weight in gold and then some!
