What is your role in the Clinic?

"I am a Handbag Clinic Repair Technician. I am a colour restoration technician but specialise in the recolouring and repair of exotic leathers. Whenever an item made of an exotic leather is booked in for leather repair or recolouring it is only worked on by myself."

What exotic leathers do you work on?

"I have repaired many different exotic leathers including crocodilian leather, snakeskin and lizard leather. Bags come in made of many different types of leather however I work on some of the more outlandish!"

Why do you need an exotic specialist in the workshop?

"It takes many months of specialised training to learn how to care for these leathers and restore them. These leathers are far more delicate and are also considerably more valuable. The recolouring of an exotic leather is far more intricate and detailed than that of the traditional hides used in bag making. Most exotic hides, especially snakeskin and lizard have numerous colours on them and normally to replicate this in case of restoration the patterns need to be hand painted on each individual scale. Therefore, the specialist has undergone the correct training to be able to do this and understand how best to approach each one."

What made you want to become a specialist in the exotic leathers?

"They are fascinating! It is interesting replicating the natural pattern of the animal and I love how each item is so different from the rest. Although no bag is identical because no hide is identical, exotic leathers are very diverse from one another, again because of their patterns. This individuality is what drew me to the exotic leathers."

What was one of the most interesting hides you have worked on?

"I once removed a large oil stain from a bag made from eel. Eel leather is very, very thin and very absorbent. The pattern isn’t as obvious in its multi-tonal effects like snake for example, however the colours needed to recreate this subtlety was more than I expected. Nevertheless, we managed to remove the oil stain and the customer was extremely pleased with the result!"
